Present Simple (verb (+s) - facts,/habits - signal words (=adjunct of time): always, usually, sometimes etc.



Past Simple (verb +ed/2nd form) - action finished & when is important; a sequence of actions in the past - signal words: yesterday, when, last, etc.



Used to - to talk about habits/situations in the past; Would - to talk about habits in the past

Tenses review - present perfect/past perfect simple
Present Perfect (has/have + 3rd form)- action still going on (started in the past up to now)/action recently finished & result still visible -when is NOT important/mentioned - signal words: so far, since, up till now, how long, ever, never, yet, still etc.

difference with Present Perferct Continuous: Present Perfect -> shorter actions, also with "never


Past Perfect (had + 3rd form) - action took place before another action in the past (always accompanied with a verb in the past simple in the sentence)  - signal words: before, after, when

Present Perfect (has/have  been + verb + ing)-
 to emphasize duration; to signal irritation (always); to signal pride;- signal words: for hours, all day now, for a long time time etc.
to indicated that a current result is the consequence of sth. that has been going on (no signal word)


Past Perfect (had been + verb + Ing) -
To emphasize duriation & to show that sth. took place before another action in the past (signal word)
To show that sth. is the result of an action that took a longer time in the past (no time indication)

  • Past Continuous (was/were + verb + ing) - to emphasize duration; to indicated sth. was already  going on when sth. else interrupted; descriptive - signal words: while, when


  • Present Continuous (am/is/are + verb + ing) - to indicated sth. is going on right now; irritation; future arrangement (diary appointment/ when/where usually known)

  • Future Simple  - to talk about any action in the future:

will = future facts, intenctions, hopes, promises, offers, spontaneous decision at the moment of speaking; prediction not based on evidence

going to = intention/plan, prediction based on evidence

present simple = timetables/schedules

present continuous = future arrangement (diary appointment - when/where usually known)
