  • know the difference between an active or a passive sentence
  • Can create positive, negative and question sentences with the present simple passive + past simple passive

  5. Monkeys adore bananas
  6. Bananas are adored by monkeys

The passive
  • = Lijdende vorm

  • Action/verb is more important than who does it

  • Can be used in any tense but we're focussing on two today
  • Present simple passive
  •  Jack sells houses
  • Houses are sold by Jack
  • --> am/is/are + past participle
  • Past simple passive
  • Jack sold houses
  • Houses were sold by Jack
  • --> was/were + past participle

  • The mistakes were corrected (by the teacher)
  • Negative 
  •  The mistakes were not/weren't corrected (by the teacher)
  • Question
  • Were the mistakes corrected (by the teacher)?
Negative = subject + form of to be + not + past participle
Question = form of to be + subject + past participle

By who?
  • Sometimes you will see "by ..."
  • This indicates who did the action of course
  • However, not neccesary!
  • For example: Was my parcel delivered today?

  3. The money was stolen.
  4. They are paid on Fridays.
  5. I washed my car three weeks ago.
  6. His hair was cut by a professional.
  7. It would have been fixed at the weekend.
  8. The national anthem was sung by Jason this time.
