Why is that man looking around like that? He …must…be…….. lost.
That woman ……can’t………..be a doctor! She looks far too young.
John always fails the tests, even though he’s clever. He ……can’t………study enough.

2nd Conditional
1) for imaginary situations ( hypothetical) in the present or future 
- to talk about things in the future that are unlikely
- things that are impossible in the present situation
2) to give advice or suggestions
3) Hypothetical questions
If I won the lottery, I would buy three houses.
If I were a genius, I would know all the answers

if you were the president of the United States, what would you do?
if + past simple, ....would + infinitive

You can use the modal verbs would, could, might for the 2nd conditionals:

- If she lived in London, she would have English friends
- If I were a doctor, I could help you.
- If you wanted to learn Spanish , I might come along with you.

Talks about the past
- An imaginary situation in the past - imaginary result in the past
- For regrets about the past



If I had moved to France, I would have spoken French fluently.
If I had asked her earlier, we wouldn't have been in trouble.
 if + past perfect + would have + past participle

You can use the modal verbs would have, could have, might have for the 3rd conditionals:

could have = possibility / ability
If you had lent me your car, I could have got there faster.
might have = probability / certainty
If she had done her best, she might have come first
