Past Continuous
For actions in the past that were in progress (they were going on). It is like the present continuous, but in the past. They are finished now.
OR
An action that was in progress but got interrupted by another (which is written in the Past Simple).

I was doing my homework (when the phone rang).
They were doing their homework, while their father was preparing dinner.

Regular verbs

Positive sentences:
I / He / She / It →
was + verb+ing
You / We / They →
were + verb+ing
Example: They were dancing.
Negative sentences:
I / He / She / It →  was not + verb+ing
You / We / They → were not + verb+ing
Example: He was not driving his car.

Questions:
Was I/he/she/it (not) + verb+ing?
Were you/we/they not + verb+ing
Example: Was it raining?

Exceptions
There are a few special verbs. Some verbs lose the -e, some get an extra letter.
Swim → swimming:  A verb with 1 syllable, ending in a vowel and then a
      consonant; the consonant doubles
Take → taking:   A verb ending in a vowel - consonant - ‘e’; the letter ‘-e’
      disappears
Panic → panicking:  A verb ending in a ‘-c’ gets the letter ‘-k’ added to -ing

Signal words
Past Continuous: while, when
After when you use the past simple
After while/as you use the past continuous

He was eating when his phone rang. (past cont. - past simple)
While he was eating, his phone rang. (past con. - past simple)
The phone rang while they were eating. (past simple - past cont.)
When the phone rang, they were eating. (past simple - past cont.)

Past Perfect
Use it when one action happened before another. The second action is written in the past simple.

John had gone out when I arrived in the office.
This means John is already gone by the time that you arrive at the office.

How to make

had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)
had not/hadn’t + past participle
Question: Had …((subject) pronoun)... past participle … ?

Past participle: 
For regular verbs: same as past (walked, worked)
For irregular verbs: third row in the list (begin - began - begun)

Past Perfect: quite a list (with overlap), keep in mind this is about two actions happening, one before the other.

Remember
When you see a sentence check:
- Are there two actions?
- If yes: 
   - are they going on at the same time? -> Present/Past continuous
   - is action B interrupting action A? -> A = past continuous, B = past simple
   - is action B happening after action A, but not interrupting it? -> A = past perfect, B = past simple
