1 What are some common sanitation rules in a restaurant kitchen?

2 What happens when people do not follow sanitation rules?

Slide 8 - Diapositive

1. There are numerous sanitation rules that are common in restaurant kitchens. It is important that all floors and surfaces be regularly cleaned and sanitized. It is also important to make sure that leftover foods are properly sealed and stored away. One common sanitation rule is to ensure that all utensils are washed properly. Knives are often used to cut raw meats like chicken and pork. Another rule is that the surfaces need to be disinfected with soap and bleach. Also, it is important to cook food at the proper temperatures.
2. Several problems occur when people do not follow sanitation rules. For example, if utensils and cutting boards are not cleaned and disinfected properly, certain diseases can be spread. If you're cutting chicken or pork, for instance you can spread salmonella or trichinosis. E.coli causes another type of food poisoning. Also, if food is not properly sealed and not stored at the proper temperature, it may rot. Lastly, cooked food needs to be separated from raw food.

Context guessing

Slide 13 - Diapositive

Goal of this class: students know that they can use context to understand what is being said.

  • Why is context important?

  • How about if I say: "It's okay to make mistakes".
What is context?

Slide 14 - Diapositive

Elicit: what is context?

What if I say?

Slide 18 - Diapositive

A personal train, in which there were 30 passengers, crashed into an agricultural combine. Apparently, the vehicle is right on an unmarked railroad crossing.

Paradoxical is the fact that less than 20 meters away there is a level crossing with a signalized and equipped railway, but the only access road to the agricultural fields in the area intersects with another railway. Thus, people are forced to put their lives in danger, every day.

You know more than you think!

Slide 23 - Diapositive

Most new information is built on old information. Context can help you remember the information that is already in your head. And that will help you understand the new information.

So don't say: "ik kan geen Engels" and then shut your ears and eyes. The information you already have in your head, in your own language, helps you to understand what is said in English.
How can you practice?

  • One minute world news BBC > compare news
  • Watch English movies > without subtitles (first English, okay)
  • Listen to Podcasts > about an unknown topic
