Philip II & The Netherlands

• Philip II isn't very liked in the Low Lands:

1. Religious persecution → Philip II was very strict towards
   Protestants.
2. High taxes → His wars were expensive, so people had to pay more taxes.
3. More centralisation → Philip II wanted less power for local rulers.
4. Spanish influence → Philip II gave important positions to Spanish nobles.

= bringing more power and decision-making to the central government, instead of leaving it to local rulers and cities.

The Nobleman's Petition – 1566

• 1566: About 200 Dutch nobles give Margaret of Parma a petition.
• They ask for less persecution of Protestants.
• Margaret promises to ask Philip II to change the laws.

The Iconoclastic Outbreak

• After the Nobleman's Petition, the persecution of Protestants became less strict for a short time.
• Calvinists started to preach openly outside → hagenpreken
• 1566: Iconoclastic Outbreak
• → churches and religious images
  were destroyed.

Alba & The Netherlands

• Philip II sends the Duke of Alba to the Netherlands.
• Alba needs to:
• Punish the rebels
• Stop Protestantism
• Increase royal control
• He introduces the Tenth coin → a 10% tax on sales.
• → More resistance against Spanish rule.
