Read the examples:

Because they had been working so well together, 

they became really good friends. 

It turned out later that the two guys had been having similar problems for some time. 

What is the rule?
We use the Past Perfect Continuous to talk about ..............
that began ..........
a specific time in the past.

1. continuous + before
2. continuous + at the same time as
3. single + before
4. single + at the same time as

Practise time!

Use Past Continuous (was/were + ww-ing)

or

Past Perfect Continuous (had been + ww-ing)

Example: 

When my alarm clock went off, I had been sleeping (sleep) for eleven hours. 

Her face was red and she had a tissue in her hand, so I knew she ............ (cry).

I met an old friend of mine yesterday when I ................. (shop).

When she finally got to see the doctor she ................... (wait) for over an hour.

Evaluation

You repeated: 

Past simple: verb + ed / 2nd form irregular verbs

Past Perfect: had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

You learned:
