Today's aim

 understand when you need to use: 

can/could/be able to/be allowed to/may/might

auxiliaries (hulpwerkwoorden)

In this lesson we will discuss the following auxiliaries;

1. can/ could

2. to be able to

3. could, may, might

4. to be allowed to.

You know all of them in the next slides I will discuss them again.

Can / to be able to = kunnen

can/ could - je beheerst het (could - verleden tijd)

- I can drive a car because I had lessons.

to be able to - je bent er toe in staat. de mogelijkheid is er.

He is able to cheat on the test because the teacher is not looking. 

Can/ Could

Can: I can swim because I had swimming lessons

Could: je beheerste iets maar niet nu meer

When I was young I could run 4 miles in 12 minutes. 

Can - vertalen

Kunnen => in de verleden tijd is =>could

=>in andere tijden gebruiken we ' to be able to'

future - I will be able to go on holiday this year.

present perfect - I have been able to draw this picture.  

could/ may/ might

Deze drie hulpwerkwoorden geven 'mogelijkheid' aan.

It could happen - het zou kunnen gebeuren

it may happen - het zou misschien kunnen gebeuren

it might happen - het zou heel misschien kunnen gebeuren.

To be allowed to

To be allowed to: iets is toegestaan.

He is allowed to teach that class

They were not allowed to leave the room

To be allowed to + hele werkwoord

• = mogen.

• in plaats van may en can in alle andere tijden dan de tegenwoordige tijd.

• Thomas was allowed to leave early.
  
• Everyone will be allowed to use a dictionary.
