  • sentences in simple present
  • Yes, I walk to school.                       - Do you walk to school?

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Making yes-no questions 2
Sometimes, there is more than one verb in the sentence
  • make a question by putting the first verb at the beginning of the sentence. The rest of the sentence stays the same.
  • Yes, I have been complaining all day.         - Have you been complaining...?
  • No, they aren't talking to each other.          - Are they talking to each other?
  • Yes, she will be late!                                       - Will she be late?

Slide 9 - Diapositive

!!! Making questions  with the verb 'to be'

  • make a question by putting the form of 'to be' at the beginning of the sentence
  • I am a doctor.      - Am I a doctor?
  • She was late.         - Was she late?
  • You are nice.         - Are you nice?

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Making questions using question words
You also have to know how to make questions using wh-words.
  • who
  • where
  • when
  • why
  • whose
  • what
  • how (many)

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Making questions
For most wh-questions the same rules for making questions apply, you simply add the wh-word at the beginning of the sentence:

  • What did they do to make you mad?
  • Where have you been all afternoon?
  • How do you feel?
  • When did you get home?
  • Who do you like most?

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Making questions
However, when 'who' or 'what' is the subject of the sentence, you do not need to add 'do/does/did':

  • What happened to her?
  • Who knows the answer?
subject?
