Slide 2 - Diapositive

Making questions
When making questions in English you have three options:
  1. there is one verb in the sentence and this is not a form of 'to be'
  2. there is one verb in the sentence and this is a form of 'to be'
  3. there is more than one verb in the sentence

Slide 3 - Diapositive

Making questions
1. there is one verb in the sentence and this is not a form of 'to be'
  • sentences in simple present
  • I walk to school.                - Do I walk to school?
  • She walks to school.         - Does she walk to school?
  • sentences in simple past
  • You walked to school.     - Did you walk to school?
  • He walked to school.       - Did he walk to school?

Making questions
2. there is one verb in the sentence and this is a form of 'to be'
  • make a question by putting the form of 'to be' at the beginning of the sentence
  • I am a teacher.      - Am I a teacher?
  • She was late.         - Was she late?
  • You are nice.         - Are you nice?

Slide 5 - Diapositive

Making questions
3, there is more than one verb in the sentence
  • make a question by putting the first verb at the beginning of the sentence. The rest of the sentence stays the same.
  • You have been complainig all day.     - Have you been complaining...?
  • They are talking to each other.            - Are they talking to each other?

Making questions
You also have to know how to make questions using wh-words.
  • who
  • where
  • when
  • why
  • whose
  • what
  • how (many)

Slide 7 - Diapositive

Making questions
For most wh-questions the same rules for making questions apply, you simply add the wh-word at the beginning of the sentence:

  • What did they do to make you mad?
  • Where have you been all afternoon?
  • How do you feel?
  • When did you get home?
  • Who do you like most?

Slide 8 - Diapositive

Making questions
However, when 'who' or 'what' is the subject of the sentence, you do not need to add 'do/does/did':

  • What happened to her?
  • Who knows the answer?
subject?
onderwerp
