The governance of the Netherlands
The Netherlands was in the Middle Ages nothing
more than some provinces that governed
themselves.

Slide 8 - Diapositive

The governance of the Netherlands
The Spanish Charles V was the king of these provinces and wanted to centralise the Netherlands:
an area that is governed from 1 central
point or person.
He did that with:
  1. More and higher taxes
  2. Laws that apllied everywhere
  3. Persecuting protestants

Slide 9 - Diapositive

Philip II
Philip II (the son of Charles V) inherited the power from 1555.
He took even more measures:
He appointed a:
  1. Governor
  2. Stadholder

Slide 10 - Diapositive

Resistance against Philip II
A lot of people did not like Philip as a king.
Their reasons were:
  1. A lot of nobility didn't want centralisation
  2. The Dutch were against the higher taxes
  3. Protestants were persecuted and murdered

Slide 11 - Diapositive

Resistance from 1566
  • In 1566, punishments for protestants were not as harsh anymore.
  • Because of this, a lot of protestants started field preaching: a church service outside.
  • Some protestants even destroyed the catholic churches as a form of revolt: Iconoclastic Fury.

Slide 12 - Diapositive

Consequences Iconoclastic Fury
Philip was furious that people destroyed the
churches and took immediate measures.
  • The ruthless Duke of Alva became governor
  • He set up a court (=council of troubles)
     that punished everyone who
     participated in the iconoclastic fury.
