Past simple
Use : Describes completed actions or events in the past. 
Rules: Use the verb's past form for all subjects (eg, "I worked"). 
Examples:  Affirmative : "She traveled to Italy last year." 
Negative: "They didn't finish the project." 
Question: "Did you enjoy the movie?"

Use: Describes actions that were in progress at a particular time in the past. 
Rules: Subject + was/were + verb + -ing 
Examples: 
Affirmative: "I was reading when he called." 
Negative: "They weren't studying at midnight." 
Question: "Were you sleeping at that time?"
