Adverbs

What are adverbs?

An adverb is a word that describes:

 - a verb                                          

- an adjective

- another adverb

- an entire sentence

She runs quickly. 

I am really busy. 

He ran very quickly. 

Unfortunately, I can't come.

Position of adverbs

- initial position:

                      

                          Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. 

                          Suddenly I felt afraid. 

(Commenting adverbs  or adverbs of time (emphasis))

               

Position of adverbs

- mid position:    

 before the main verb / after a form of 'to be' / after the first auxiliary

                       

                       He carefully opened the box. 

                       She is always late.         

                        I would never have come if you hadn't bought my ticket. 

(Adverbs of manner or adverbs of frequency)

Position of adverbs

- end position:

                           He speaks quickly.

                           I am flying to London tomorrow. 

                           The boys are playing upstairs.  

(Adverbs of manner (more emphasis), adverbs of time, adverbs of place)
