Past Simple = something happened (short)

Past continuous vs. past simple
Signalword 'when' = past simple in this part of the sentence:
''When the phone rang, she was writing a letter.''
'' What were you doing when the earthquake started?''

Signalword 'while' = two things are happening at the same time 
Use the past continuous twice:
''What were you doing while you were waiting?''
''I was studying while my father was making dinner.''

Past continuous vs. past simple
But what if something else happens in this time period? 
''I was cooking dinner when my mother called.''
Then use the past simple.

The activity taking place is described with the past continuous.
The activity that is ''added'' is described using the past simple.

Past Continuous = was/were + ww + ing
- verleden tijd
- was in het verleden aan de gang
- in NL: 'ik was aan het ....' 


:) They were cleaning the house when I came home
:( They weren't cleaning the house right now
? Were they cleaning the house right now?
