How do you make the past continuous?

Why are irregular verbs so hard to learn?

1. There is no rule that you can apply. You'll have to study them and learn them by heart.
2. They are not English words.
3. Some change in the past tense and some don't .
4. The changes in the past tense are not the same for words that sound the same. (bite,bit, bitten - write, wrote, written)
