  • describes (long) actions in progress; when a short action (ps) interrupts the long actions (pc)

  • finished action/situation, past habits, past actions in order

past simple (ps)
NL: = Verleden tijd = voltooide acties/situaties, gewoonten uit het verleden, beschrijft de gebeurtenissen in chronologische volgorde
-> finished action: We moved to the USA. 
-> actions in order: They left England in 2005 and my dad started work...
-> past habits: I went to the beach every day...
Past continuous (pc)
NL: = De duurvorm in de verleden tijd = beschrijft een onafgemaakte of onvolledige handeling in het verleden = 'aan het + ww'; = beschrijft (lange) acties in uitvoering; wanneer een korte actie (ps) de lange acties (pc) onderbreekt 
-> action in progess: My parents were living in Australia...
-> interrupted action: My mum was driving (when she had to go...)
-> sets a scene: It was raining...

Past Simple: short action that is completely finished = korte actie die volledig afgerond is

verb +ed or 2nd irr verb

Ms. D made this lesson last week.
Sophia worked hard yesterday.
Did you get rest last night?
No, I didn't sleep well at all.

Past Continuous: long action that was happening in the past = lange actie die in het verleden plaatsvond

was/were verb +ing

Ms D was studying for four years.
Maxim was calling for hours.
Were you cooking all night?
Well yes, I was baking cookies.
