At the end of this lesson I can tell the difference between the past simple and the past continuous

Hoe maak je deze tijd?

To be (was + were) + werkwoord+ing

Gebruik: 

als iets in het verleden een tijdje bezig was.

 It was raining.

We were singing.

Past continuous vs. past simple

Wanneer gebruik je de Past Simple?

Als je over iets vertelt/schrijft 

dat in het verleden gebeurd is.

Het is begonnen en gestopt in de verleden tijd.

Er staat een tijdsbepaling in van Verleden Tijd 

(yesterday, this morning, three years ago, etc.).

Als ze samen in een zin staan dan:

• geeft de Past Continuous de langer durende actie aan
• geeft de Past Simple de korter durende actie aan

Wat duurt langer?

    geeft de PC de langer durende actie aan
    geeft de PS de korter durende actie aan

I was walking when I dropped my marker.

Het lopen duurt langer dan het vallen van mijn markeerstift.

Je gebruikt de past continuous i.c.m. de past simple om aan te geven dat er iets gebeurde (korte actie; past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (lange actie; past continuous).
