Past Simple, Past Continuous, Present Perfect

When do you use the past simple and how do you make a (+) and (-) sentence?

Past Simple 

(verleden tijd - specifiek moment)

Form:

(+)= ww + ed:    kiss - kissed 

(-)= didn't + ww:  watch - didn't watch

irregular= 2nd column: eat - ate - eaten/ go - went - gone

Past Simple

Use:

Actions or events in the past which are completely finished:

• Yesterday, he cycled to school.
  
• She went skiing last week.

Past Continuous 

(verleden tijd - aan het doen)

Form:

(+)= was/were + ww + -ing: He was eating an apple.

(-)= was/were not + ww + ing: John was not buying a sandwich when the phone rang.  

Use:

Something was happening in the past and it took some time.  

• She was taking a bath when she heard the burglar.
• They were playing soccer last week. 

We were walking the dog when we saw PM Rutte in the park.

She ...... to music when the bell rang.

When do you use the present perfect and how do you make a (+) and (-) sentence?

Present Perfect 

(verleden begonnen en nu nog belangrijk)

Form:

(+)= Has / have  + ww + ed: I have finished the job. 

(-)= has/have + not + ww + ed: We haven't worked yet.

irregular= 3rd column: see - saw - seen / do - did - done

Present Perfect

Use:

Something started in the past and is connected with the present time. Time is not a specific moment but a period.

• I have lived in this city since 2017.
• She has had a fever for a while now.
