Function

1. To talk about something that has happened in the past and it is important when (finished time)

Examples: I saw the Eiffel tower in 2009.

Signal words: when I was young, last weekend, in 2020, this morning, last Friday, 5 min ago

- Last night, I watched a great film. 

- I lived in Oman from 2010 - 2015.

- First, he read the book and then he watched the movie.

- The New Orleans Saints won te Super Bowl in 2009.

Revision Present perfect

Form:

• regular verbs: have / has + past participle (= voltooid deelwoord)
• irregular verbs: see the list, 3rd column

Example: - I have played football for three years
- She has given me a really good idea

Function:

1. Something happened in the past and it is not important when. Ex: I have done my homework.
   
   
2. Something started in the past and is still ging on. Look for words like: for, since, in. 
   Ex: I have played hockey for three years.

3. Something started in the past and you can still see the result. 

Ex: I have lost my keys. / She has seen that film 6 times already.

4. Something just happened or hasn't happened yet. Look for words like: just, lately, recently, yet

Ex. Have they just joined the party?

2: Is there a time clause that indicates it happened in the past?

Yes: past simple.                    No: present perfect.

You can have both tenses in 1 sentence when 2 things happened at the same time in the past. The activity that takes more time is always in the present perfect.

Examples: 

- When I was taking a shower, the bell rang.

- I was listening to music, when she came in.
