When do we use it?

For an activity in the past that continued for a longer period of time and eventually stopped. 

She was enjoying the party.       We were watching the match on tv.

Form?

was/were + verb +-ing

I, she, he, it - was (singular)

you, we, they - were (plural)

I was hiking in the woods.

They were hiking in the woods.
