Noun Classification

Aims for this lesson

What is a noun

1. words for actions
2. words for descriptions
3. words for people, places, things, concepts
4. words for manner (how you do something)

Common nouns

Things, places, people that you can see or touch like car, dog, doctor, house.

Proper nouns

Words for people, places and things that start with a capital letter like Meergronden, Daniël, Amsterdam.

Collective nouns

Nouns that are singular but describe a group of people like team, school  (of fish), class. 

Watch out: regular plural nouns that also have a singular form (that refers to one person/thing/place etc) are not collective nouns. I.e. "girls"

Abstract nouns

Words for concepts and ideas that you cannot touch, see or hear like freedom, love, hate, happiness. 

Write down all nouns in the following text: My mother called my brother David and told him not to be so jealous of his siblings. She said: "In this family, there is no room for jealousy.
