Past simple
We use the past simple to talk about things that happened in the past and are finished.

There are 2 groups of verbs: regular verbs / irregular verbs

Regular verbs follow rules.
Irregular verbs don't follow rules and you will have to learn them by heart!

REGEL: Werkwoord + ED
He played soccer last week.
They visited their cousins on Monday.

Uitzondering: 
Werkwoord eindigt op E - geen extra E toevoegen!
She promised to phone back later. 
The food tasted very good.

Practise time- Use the past simple
  1. Jack and Jim _____ a flight to Spain last week (to book). 
  2. They _____ to Schiphol by car (to travel).
  3. They  _____ at the airport at 8am (to arrive).
  4. It was very busy at the airport. They _______ for 4 hours (to wait).
  5. The plane ______ at noon (to depart).
  6. It______ in Madrid two hours later (to land). 
  7. Jack and Jim ______ their journey by train (to continue).

Practise time- Use the past simple
  1. Jack and Jim booked a flight to Spain last week (to book). 
  2. They  travelled to Schiphol by car (to travel).
  3. They  arrived at the airport at 8am (to arrive).
  4. It was very busy at the airport. They waited for 4 hours (to wait).
  5. The plane departed at noon (to depart).
  6. It landed in Madrid two hours later (to land). 
  7. Jack and Jim continued their journey by train (to continue).

Ed Sheeran walked home after his concert
To be - was /were - been
To buy - bought - bought
To have - had - had
To sing - sang - sung
etc
John bought a concert ticket.
He sang along with all the songs.
John had a great time at the concert!

Go to Stepping Stones p. 213 - 214 and look at the list of irregular verbs.

  1. Vanessa ______  to a Katy Perry concert in June (to go).
  2. Her best friend, Jenny, ______ the ticket online (to buy).
  3. The ticket was quite expensive, it _____ E75 (to cost).
  4. But then Jenny ____ ill and could not go (to fall).
  5. So she _____ her ticket to Vanessa (to give).
  6. Vanessa ____ very happy and she is a big Katy Perry fan! (to be).
