Plurals (meervouden)
Most plurals have a regular plural form. You make these words plural by adding an -s.
NEVER use -'s for plural forms!
  • gift - gifts
  • dog - dogs
  • message - messages
  • car - cars

Plurals - Nouns with /sh/-sound
Nouns that end with -s, -ss, -x, -z or ch get -es

  • bus - buses
  • match - matches
  • glass - glasses
  • box - boxes
  • buzz - buzzes

Plurals - Nouns that end in -o
Nouns that end with consonant + o usually get - es
But there are exceptions, these are usually borrowed from other languages. These words get -s in plural form

  • hero - heroes / tomato - tomatoes / echo - echoes
  • exceptions: photo - photos / solo - solos

Plurals - Nouns with (e)f
Nouns that end with -f or -ef get -ves

  • shelf - shelves
  • wolf - wolves
  • knife - knives
  • dwarf - dwarves
  • leaf - leaves

1) nouns that end in consonant + y get -ies
2) nouns that end in vowel + y get -s          (vowels: a, e, i, o, u)

  1. party - parties / baby - babies  / hobby  - hobbies 
  2. key - keys  / boy - boys / eye - eyes

1) some nouns have irregular plural forms
2) some nouns stay the same in plural form

  1. mouse - mice / woman - women / man - men / foot - feet / tooth - teeth 
  2. one fish - twenty fish / sheep - sheep / moose - moose
