Adjectives and Adverbs

1. Frank is a good singer 
2. My brother is a careful driver.

An adjective modifies a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord). It tells us something about the noun.

1. Frank sings well. 
2. My brother drives carefully.

An Adjective (Bijwoord) can modify other words. It tells us for example how something happens, how often and in what manner. It can tell us something about an adjective, other adverb, verb or part of a sentence even!

Watch out!
1. My teachers are nice.
2. That car looks beautiful.
3. Haggis smells awful.

After linking verbs (koppelwerkwoorden) such as: to be , to seem , to feel + to look , to smell, to sound, to taste you do not use an adverb (bijwoord) but an adjective!

Linking verbs

Verbs that describe the noun. These verbs are not always used as linking verbs. Because they describe a noun an adjective is used. 

Sally grew angry.

The plant grew quickly.

to become     to seem
to feel              to smell
to get              to sound
to go                to stay
to grow           to taste
to look             to turn

An adverb can also tell us something about an adjective. 

1. Frank is an extremely good singer.
2. My brother is an awfully careful driver.
3. It's an absolutely perfect video clip.

An adverb can also tell us something about another adverb. 

1. Frank sings absolutely beautifully.
2. My brother drives really well.
3. That clip was filmed extremely perfectly.

You can form most adverbs by putting -ly after the word.
Beautiful - beautifully

Watch out! Sometimes you have to change the spelling of the word.
Terrible - terribly
Easy - easily

There are irregular adverbs as well! The adverb of good is  well - She's a good performer. She performs well. 

Some adverbs are the same as their adjectives. 
Fast (snel), fair (sportief/eerlijk), low (laag), high (hoog), hard (hard), long (lang), late (laat), loud (luid) en straight (onmiddelijk) - He's a fast driver, He drives fast
