Smiling

A famous Russian proverb states that ‘a smile without reason is a sign of idiocy’ and a so-called ‘smile of respect’ is seen as insincere and often regarded with suspicion in Russia. Yet in countries like the United States, Australia and Britain, smiling is often interpreted as a sign of openness, friendship and respect, and is frequently used to break the ice.

Direct speech

Als iemand zelf wat zegt:

''Are you going to the office?'' 

''The client isn't available today.''

Indirect speech

Als je in je eigen woorden wilt zeggen wat een ander letterlijk heeft gezegd:

He asked if I was going to the office.

She said (that) the client wasn't available today. 

(In)direct speech

Direct:

''Are you going to the office?''

''The client isn't available today.''

Indirect:

He asked if I was going to the office.

She said (that) the client wasn't available today. 

Exercise

- Turn the sentence from direct to indirect speech. 

- Denk aan de werkwoordsvorm.
