Past simple or past continuous?

I walked to school yesterday

Past simple

• Verb + ed or irregular forms
• We walked to school yesterday
  
• Something happened and ended in the past
• Signal words:
• Yesterday, last year, three years ago etc. 

Past continuous

• Was/were + verb + ing
• We were walking to school 
• Something in the past lasted a while
• Signal words:
• While, at the same time, when suddenly etc. 

Past simple + past continuous

• Something had been going on in the past when something else interrupted it 
• I was listening to the radio when my friend called
• I was sitting in the park when I saw a squirrel ran by
• PC happening when PS interrupts it
