Signal words
Yesterday, last week, last month, two days ago, four days ago, months ago, etc.
Examples
He walked her home last night.
I talked to him yesterday.
She swam a lot in her spare time during the holidays.
Our math teacher taught us a lot last year

- when something was happening for a while in the past
He was living abroad at the time. 

- when something that happened in the past is interrupted: 
We were watching TV, when the door bell rang
the interruption is past simple tense

Pay attention!
  • If 2 actions happen after eachother you use the past simple twice:
When I got home, I had a cup of tea.

  •  If 2 actions happen at the same time you use  the past continuous twice:
While my sister was watching TV, I was listening to music.
