Past Continous en Past Simple

Past Continuous = al aan de gang ( lang)

Past Simple = iets gebeurde (kort)

Past continuous vs. past simple

Deze zinnen kun je herkennen aan het woordje 'when (of while *).':

Lange gebeurtenis en korte gebeurtenis.

• She was writing a letter, when her mother came home.
• What were you doing when the earthquake started?'
• My mum broke a plate when/while she was setting the table.

While gebruik je als je begint met de past simple (korte gebeurtenis)

Past continuous vs. past simple

Het woordje 'while' gebruik je ook, als twee dingen tegelijk  aan de gang waren  (dus twee lange gebeurtenissen)

Dan gebruik je  dus twee keer de past continuous:

• What were you doing while you were waiting?
• I was studying while my father was making dinner.

Past continuous vs. past simple

Maar wat als er tijdens die periode iets anders gebeurd? 
''I was cooking dinner when my mother called.''

Dan gebruik je de past simple.

De activiteit die aan de gang was, is de past continuous.

De activiteit die 'erbij komt', is de past simple.

Past continuous vs. past simple

Je gebruikt de past continuous i.c.m. de past simple om aan te geven dat er iets gebeurde (korte actie = past simple) terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (lange actie = past continuous).

 I was reading a book when the phone rang. 

I was washing my car when the accident happened.

 I _________________________ (read) the newspaper, when all of a sudden my cat ___________________ (jump) onto my lap.

 I WAS READING (read) the newspaper, when all of a sudden my cat JUMPED (jump) onto my lap.

We ______________________ (walk) the dog,, while the neighbours _______________ (wash) their car. 

Past Continuous & Past Continuous

We WERE WALKING (walk) the dog, while the neighbours WERE WASHING (wash) their car.
