How do we form the past simple, regular verbs?

1. verb + - ed (played)
2. she/he/it : verb+ -(e)s (she plays)
3. verb+to be+ -ing (she is playing)
4. have/has + past participle (she has played)

Past Simple - Regular Verbs

After a regular verb you put '-ed' 

It snowed in London.

Past Simple - Regular verbs

A verb ending on a consonant + -y,  -y in -ie:

• I carry - I carried

No change with a vowel + -y :

• I play - I played

When a verb ends with an -e, then just + -d 

• I live - I lived

Final consonant is doubled when it ends with vowel + consonant:

• I drop - I dropped

What were you watching?

We use the past continuous...

1. to describe a background scene in a story or in a description of a main event.

2. to talk about an action that was in progress when another action took place

(for the shorter action, which happened while the longer one was in progress, we use the past simple)

Examples:

1. At 7 a.m. Doug was having breakfast. He was sitting  at the table and he was drinking coffee.

2. When he was finishing his breakfast, Meg came into the kitchen
