  • the different sorts of nouns 
  • the difference between countable and uncountable nouns
  • the effect they have on other words in a sentence
  • how English nouns are dealing with gender

common noun - 
 a word such as table, cat or sea, that refers to an object or a thing but is not the name of a particular person, place or thing

collective noun - 
a singular noun, such as committee or team, that refers to a group of people, animals or things and, in
proper noun - 
The name of a particular person, place or thing


abstract noun - 
a noun, for example goodness or freedom, that refers to an idea or a general quality, not to a physical object

Female/Male/Neuter
Some words are similar for both females and males
  • baby, dancer, relative 
Some words are different, the female word gets an appendix
  • Actor - Actress
  • Heir - Heiress
  • Hero - Heroine

  • bachelor - spinster
  • king -  queen

Personal pronouns
In general:
Only people and pets are referred to as 'he, his, him, she, her'

All other stuff: it, its
Exception: boats and cars are sometimes referred to as 'she' or 'her' especially when their owner is fond of them!
Countries: in writing often 'she'.
