What's in the test?

- There will be gap filling exercises;
- You should be able to make sentences with a given word from the word list. Make sure that the meaning of the word will become clear in this sentence!
- There will be "odd one out" exercises;
- There will be an exercise in which you have to match the words with their definitions;
- There will be two reading & answering questions exercises.

Important information for the test:
- Repeat/study all the words from the word list Spare Time & Having Fun, please!
- You have to know the words two ways: from Dutch - English AND from English - Dutch.
- Read through the definitions & example sentences. You don't have to know these by heart, but you will be asked to match words with their definitions.
- The test will be in Learnbeat, so make sure you bring a fully charged laptop, please!

Phrasal Verbs

What are phrasal verbs?
A phrasal verb combines a normal verb with an adverb (bijwoord) or a preposition (voorzetsel) to create an entirely new verbal phrasethe phrasal verb. The meaning of a phrasal verb is usually unrelated to the meanings of the words that compose it, so think of a phrasal verb as an entirely new and independent word.
Let's have a look at an example:

Read the text together & find the phrasal verbs
The phrasal verbs in the story are in the past tense. Let's find them, underline them on the worksheet in part A AND put them in the present tense. Note down these present tenses at part B of your worksheet, please. Now do the rest of the exercises individually or together with your neighbour.

How to study/practise for the test?
There are several things you can do to study for the test:
- See the 10 tips for studying vocabulary in SomToday "jaarbijlagen".
- Form new sentences with difficult words from the word list. Try to make sentences in which the meaning of the word will become clear.
- Find pictures for words you find difficult.
- Look up synonyms (words that mean the same) for words you find difficult.
- Look up antonyms (words that mean the opposite) for words you find difficult.
> The last two exercises can be done by using a thesaurus.
