CH. 1: An Introduction
  • Research Question. This is the question that will be answered by doing this experiment
  • Hypothesis. These are the results that you expect to observe over the course of the experiment. The hypothesis is not always going to be confirmed by the results, it is just the prediction made before doing the experiment.
  • A good hypothesis will be formed using the following sentence: “If  ……… is done, then ….. will happen.” For example: “If I tap with both hands, my right hand will have the most taps.” Make sure you explain your Hypothesis in your introduction.
  • Background information. The reader needs to understand why the experiment is needed. Include any historical or theoretical background that is relevant to the

CH. 2: Materials and Method 
  • Materials. Include specific amounts, times, and measurements.
  • Procedures. The level of detail should be high enough to allow someone else to duplicate your experiment, without including any unnecessary information that may overwhelm the reader.

CH. 3: Data & Observations

  • Results. This is the collection of all the factual data obtained from your experiment. State the results in the text first, then use visual aids to show the data. 
  • Every chart, table, or graph should be labeled clearly. It should also have an accompanying paragraph (1 or 2 sentences) explaining the information it contains.

CH. 4: Conclusion, Discussion and Evaluation

  • Conclusion. This is where you interpret the results of the experiment. Accept or reject your hypothesis and explain why. Your goal is to convince the reader that you completely understand the data and have considered it fully and intelligently.
  • Accepting or rejecting your hypothesis can be done easily by stating "The hypothesis is accepted/rejected because..." Then continue with your explanation.  
  • A Summary of the data should also be part of the conclusion. Try not to copy from the data section.

Discussion and Evaluation. 
-Explain here what you have learned from the experiment. Please include what you were expecting and how the actual process compared to these expectations.  
-Comment on what you think may have caused error. Offer an explanation how could the experiment be changed to correct them. 
- Only discuss errors if they are verified by data in your study.  Also mention further experiments that could be done.

Cosmetic tips:
  • Layout: Arial 12, normal margins
  • Add titles to each section to create and index on the side.
  • Add page numbers at the bottom right of each page.
  • Language: Third person (no I, WE, US etc) present simple, correct spelling and grammar 
  • Sources (internet, textbooks etc) are cited appropriately throughout the report and included at the end of the report.
