Past Simple & Continuous

Past Simple:

Action is done, or was short

"I walked", "I ate", or "I sneezed"

Past Continuous

Shows it took time

"I was walking"

Both in same sentence

When one activity is interrupted by another:

"I was meditating until my sister sneezed"

The activity in the Past Continuous is interrupted by the activity in the Past Simple

Complete with the Past Simple & Past Continuous: He _______ (play) piano when a bomb ________ (explode).

Present Simple - When?

1. Facts

"The sun rises in the morning."

2. Routines, habits, timetables, plans

"I always cycle to school on Mondays."

3. Instructions/directions

"Clean your room right now."

Present Continuous - When?

1. An action that is happening right now, at the moment of speaking.

"I am trying to fix the computer."

2. Future plans or arrangements

"I am going to meet Sarah tonight." 

3. Repeated actions

"He is always annoying me with dumb questions."

Present Continuous - Keywords

1. Watches

Present Perfect - When?

1. Past actions (uncompleted) that continue in the present. 

"The professor has taught here for two decades"

2. Actions that happened multiple times already, and will probably happen again.

"I have already seen LOTR 20 times!"

3. An action that was just now completed

"I have just finished playing the piano."

Present Perfect - When?

4. A change over time

"My cousin has grown so much since I last saw him."

5. An uncompleted action that is expected to be finished

"I have not finished my essay yet."

Present Perfect - How?

Always "Have or Has" + verb + "ed"

He has played videogames since he was a child.

Unless irregular, then

"Have or Has" + past participle of verb

I have eaten a lot of pizza in my life. 

Present Perfect - Keywords

Just, Up to now, For, 

Ever, Never, 

So far, Yet, Since, Already

Fill in the present perfect:

Prepositions of Time

Comparatives

Than is used to compare one thing with another

"This car is faster than that car"

When something/someone changes, use 2x adjective + and

"The chef is getting better and better"

When one thing depends on another, use the

"The higher they climbed, the colder it got"

Superlatives

the + "-est"

The highest

The fastest

The oldest

Comparatives & Superlatives

With one syllable words:

Smart -> Smarter - > Smartest

With (sometimes two or) three syllable words:

Expensive -> more expensive -> most expensive

Comparative = more

Superlative = most

Irregular Comparatives & Superlatives

That is ________ (expensive) car I have ever seen.

The Lord of the Rings is ________ (good) than Star Wars.
