Past Simple & Continuous
Past Simple:
Action is done, or was short
"I walked", "I ate", or "I sneezed"

Past Continuous
Shows it took time
"I was walking"

When one activity is interrupted by another:
"I was meditating until my sister sneezed"

The activity in the Past Continuous is interrupted by the activity in the Past Simple

Present Perfect - When?
1. Past actions (uncompleted) that continue in the present. 
"The professor has taught here for two decades"
2. Actions that happened multiple times already, and will probably happen again.
"I have already seen LOTR 20 times!"
3. An action that was just now completed
"I have just finished playing the piano."

4. A change over time
"My cousin has grown so much since I last saw him."
5. An uncompleted action that is expected to be finished
"I have not finished my essay yet."

Always "Have or Has" + verb + "ed"

Unless irregular, then
"Have or Has" + past participle of verb
