Past simple

I walk down the stairs.

They fix the bike.

She plays football.

He runs a marathon.

You talk to others.

We listen to music.

Past simple

• Something important that happened in the past;
  
• Recognized by words like "Yesterday, last year, this morning, in 2013";
  
• Regular verbs: word + -ed;
  
• For example, "Called, helped, played";
  
• Irregular verbs have different forms (learn by heart);
  
• For example, "ran, sang, bought"

Past simple

Negative and question sentences:

• Did/didn't + verb;
  
• For example, "Did you buy that?" "I didn't buy that."

• Special cases regular verbs:
  
• Ending in "-y" -> "-ied"
  
• For example, "Try" becomes "Tried"
  
• Ending in "-e" -> +-d
  
• For example, "Arrange" becomes "Arranged"
  
• Ending in short vowel -> double consonant + -ed
  
• For example, "Plan" becomes "Planned"
  
• More than one syllable + ending in "l" -> double "l" + -ed
  
• For example, "Travel" becomes "Travelled"

Possessive

• When something belongs to someone you use:
• Singular: 's (Peter's rabbit.)
• Plural: ' (the boys' cat.)
• Animals and people

Girls + books

Mother + child

America + states

School + teachers

• The cat's tail.
• The entrance of the plane.
• The girls' books.
• The mother's child.
• The states of America.
• The teachers of school.

Possessive

• When talking about an object or places (things, places or countries):
• ... of ...
• The back of the car.
• The entrance of the building.
• The cities of Ireland.
