Wat is the gerund? 

Soms kan je een werkwoord als zelfstandig naamwoord gebruiken, in dat geval spreken we van the gerund. 

The gerund is eigenlijk niets anders dan een werkwoord waar je -ing achter zet. 

Wat is the gerund NIET: 

I am watching a video.

He is playing soccer with his brother.

She was doing her homework. 

Dit is de present/past continuous. 

Wat is the gerund WEL: 

I love playing a game tonight. 

Laughing is good for you. 

Susie likes shopping. 

Hier wordt het werkwoord gebruikt als zelfstandig naamwoord, je spreekt dan van the gerund. 

Wanneer gebruik je the gerund? 

Na werkwoorden waarmee je aangeeft wat je wel of niet leuk vindt (like, dislike, love, hate, fancy, envy):

- I like running on the street!

- I love doing my homework when I am at home.

Wanneer gebruik je the gerund?

Na zintuigelijke werkwoorden (see, watch, hear, smell, feel):

- I watched him kayaking trough that river.

- Did you hear him screaming that loud before?

Wanneer gebruik je the gerund? 

Na de specifieke werkwoorden (avoid, consider, give up, go on, keep, manage, mind, prefer, recommend, start, stop en suggest)

- I prefer relaxing on the beach today.

- I recommend drinking a large glass of water.

Wanneer gebruik je the gerund? 

Na uitdrukkingen:

- She can't stand dancing with him.

- It makes no sense waiting for that boat.

Na voorzetsels:

- He eats his breakfast before heading out to work.

- My sister loves to think about leaving her house and going on a journey. 

Tot slot 

The gerund suggereert dat het al gebeurd is. 

I remember doing groceries. 

Bovenstaande is dus al gedaan/gebeurd! 

To infinitive

Je gebruikt to + het hele werkwoord in veel andere gevallen. 

Deze vorm wordt niet als zelfstandig naamwoord gebruikt. Je gebruikt het:

- Na werkwoorden die gevoel/gedachte uitdrukken zoals to hope, to want, to expect, to choose, to hesitate, to ask to decide

Voorbeeld: She chooses to help him no matter what

- Na deze werkwoorden: to learn, to manage, to fail, to tend, to plan

Voorbeeld: They plan to take a trip to Mexico

To infinitive

- Na werkwoorden die "iets zeggen" uitdrukken zoals to agree, to promise, to demand, to forbid, to refuse

Voorbeeld: I agree to go with you to the party

- In combinatie met would love, would like, would hate etc

Voorbeeld: I would love to go bungee jumping one day

- Je gebruikt to infinitive vaak na een lijdend voorwerp

Voorbeeld: I asked him to read a book

- Je kunt het ook gebruiken na bijvoegelijk naamwoorden die een mening uitdrukken.

Voorbeeld: It is wonderful to have good grades at school

He likes .............. early. (wakker worden)

She enjoys ....... cakes. (bakken)

Children hate ......... to bed. (gaan)

She would love __________ (to meet) you.

He's afraid of _________ (to be) alone.
