Precautions and Staying Safe

• Setting your profile private
• Don't accept friend requests for people you don't know 
• Check with the actual person if you're unsure 
• Check the account, if it looks unsafe, unfollow and report
• Don't reply to any messages from people you don't know

Why would you make your account private ?

What is grooming(not what happens to dogs)

Grooming

• When a pedophile messages a young person over the internet, typically on a fake account, to "be their friend"
• The person is overly nice
• To meet up in person with intention of committing a crime

What do you think they say/do to young people

The 5 stages of grooming

• Targeting - Choosing a young person they can message, often pretending to be of a similar age
• Gaining access - gain trust through attention, compliments or gifts
• Trust development - Consistency in the above
• CSE risk - exposure to sexual content/acts 
• Maintaining control - use of blackmail/shame/guilt to use against them

A new person in your year has come into school and their social media is starting to go around, they have a lot of followers and not many posts:

• Tell a trusted adult 
• Use the app to report them -  typically under the three dots 
• Report to CEOP 

Make an action plan of what you need to do to stay safe online

Example action plan

• Purge friend list of people I don't talk to (are they really a friend?)
• Change my social media profiles to friends only/private
• Begin monitoring what I post (to avoid revealing personal information)
• Share any worrying contact made with a trusted adult.
