Simple, compound & complex 
3 types of sentences: 
  • simple sentences: one subject + one verb 
example: I work in a supermarket every Sunday. 
  • compound sentences: when you join two simple sentences with linking words (for, and, nor, but, or, yet or so (FANBOYS))
example: I need to take the test, but I am too sick to go to school.

  • complex sentences:  simple sentence + dependent clause with linking words such as because, although, after, when, before. 
  • dependent clause = part of a sentence with a verb that does not express a complete thought. 
example: She liked singing in front of the mirror when she was younger.

Linking words help you to connect ideas and sentences when you speak or write English. We can use linking words to give examples, add information, summarise, sequence information, give a reason or result, or to contrast ideas.

  • When? To talk about something that will be completed before a specific time in the future. 
  • Example sentence: By 2026, the government will have taken measures against climate change.

  • Example: My mom will be staying in Paris for 2 months

  • When? 1) future events that will be going on for a longer period of time.  2) Future events that will be going on at a specific time.
