Literature time! (My favourite time :-) 
You are about to read a short story with the title 'Chicxulub' by T. C Boyle.
It was first published in (the prestigious) 'The New Yorker' (an American magazine) in 2004.
It fits PERFECTLY with the theme 'Parents and Children'.
You'll see why...

Keep in mind...
- The title is Chicxulub. (A devastating meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs. Quite the event!)
- In a short story, the author has limited time to introduce characters and develop the story. Each word matters. 
- In a short story, especially the beginning is important, it needs to hook the readers and set the scene. Pay attention to what happens in this story.
- Always ask yourself: who is telling the story? Is this a trustworthy narrator?

Also important: Metaphor
A metaphor is used in this story. A metaphor is a figure of speech that directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It can clarify similarities between two different ideas.
Keep your eyes out for this!

Now,  read the first half of the story 
* Go to its learning for the story and an audio-version (youtube link)
* Read the story while listening to the audio (really a great help!)
* Stop at the top of page 7 ('a far worse place', video at 16.49) 
* Ignore difficult words, try to hold on to the main story
