Verschil 

Past continuous tense

Wordt gebruikt om een actie aan te duiden die voor langere tijd duurden in het verleden.

Past simple tense

Wordt gebruikt voor akties die zijn afgelopen in het verleden. 

Hoe ziet de Past Continuous eruit?

Past continuous tense 

 past tense of 'to be': was/were

ww  + -ing

I was eating my dinner yesterday, (when the bell rang.)

Wanneer gebruik je de Past Continuous

Om:

 een langer durende aktie in het verleden te beschrijven

op een specifiek tijdstip of 

om achtergrond informatie te geven.

Hoe ziet de past simple eruit?

Door het werkwoord in de verleden tijd te zetten.

2 soorten werkwoorden

Regelmatige werkwoorden:

regel: ww + (e)d

Onregelmatige werkwoorden:

geen regel! uit je hoofd leren

Wanneer gebruik je de Past Simple

Om:

Een aktie aan te duiden die in het verleden heeft plaatsgevonden en is afgelopen.

I worked hard yesterday, today is my day off.

Past Continuous vs Past Simple

Je kunt beide tijden in 1 zin gebruiken:

past continuous: voor de langurende aktie

past simple voor de korte aktie.

LET OP!

De korte activiteit onderbreekt de lange activiteit!

Past Simple vs Past Continuous

De korte activiteit (= past simple)

onderbreekt de lange activiteit (= past continuous)

I was doing the dishes, when the phone rang.

Use the past simple voor: korte onderbrekende activiteit

Use the past continuous voor: langer durende activiveit

Gebruik de werkwoorden:

paint

drive

I was painting my house, when a red sportscar drove by.

Signaal woorden:

Bepaalde signaalwoorden helpen om de tijd te herkennen.

Past Simple:

when, yesterday, last week, last year, three days ago, a long time ago, in 1989, etc.

Past Continous:

while, at the same time.
