English lesson: Conditionals 

Can you make a sentence with: 

If I...

4 types of conditionals 

- Zero conditional 
- First conditonal 
- Second conditional 
- Third conditional 

We use conditionals to express different hypothetical situations 

Make notes if you want!

Zero conditional 

- To describe general truths and facts 

- If + present simple, present simple 

Examples:  

If you heat ice, it melts. 

If the sun sets, it gets dark. 

If I drop a glass, it ...

First conditional 

- To describe possibilities in the present/future
- For realistic situations that likely are going to happen.

- If + present simple, will/won't + infinitive 

Examples:  

If I study hard, I will pass my exams. 

If you leave on time, you won't be late. 

Second conditional 

- To describe things that are unlikely to happen in the present/future 

- If + past simple, would/wouldn't+ infinitive 

Examples:  

If I won the lottery, I would travel the world. 

If she had a car, she would drive to work. 

Third conditional 

- To describe things that happend in the past, that you no longer can change. (to talk about regrets in the past)

- If + past perfect, would/wouldn't have + past participle

Examples:  

If I had studied harder, I would have passed my exam. 

If he had left earlier, he wouldn't have missed the train. 

Summary 

- Zero conditional (0): if + present simple, present simple. 

- First conditional (1): if + present simple, will/won't + infinitive 

- Second conditional (2): if + past simple, would/wouldn't + infinitive 

- Third conditional (3): if + past perfect, would/wouldn't have + past participle
