Types of skeleton
Endoskeleton > skeleton on the inside
Exoskeleton > skeleton on the outside
Hydrostatic skeleton > skeleton made out of water
Slide 5 - Diapositive
Endoskeleton > internal skeleton
Often made out of bones
Animals with bones> vertebrates: mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish
Bones are living tissue, they grow and repair themselves
Other types of endoskeleton
Sea urchins and starfish
Inside their bodies is a skeleton made out of fibers that are not bones!
Cuttlefish (type of squid)
Inside their bodies is a shell-like substance that is a skeleton
Slide 6 - Diapositive
Exoskeleton > external skeleton
Often made out of chitin
Animals with exoskeletons> arthropods: insects, spiders, crabs, lobsters, etc.
Exoskeletons are heavy and do not grow, animals with them will need to
moult
to grow
Other types of exoskeleton
The old exoskeleton breaks open.
The animal comes out and during a short period will be soft.
The animal can only grow during this time.
After a while the new exoskeleton will harden.
shellfish
Instead of chitin, they have a shell made out of chalk
Chitin is a strong but somewhat flexible material.
Slide 7 - Diapositive
Hydrostatic skeleton > water skeleton
made out of water, only strong in water
Animals with hydrostatic skeletons> worms, water slugs, jellyfish
Absorbing water helps them keep their shape, but make them flexible. It protects against bumps
On land this type of skeleton is useless
Slide 8 - Diapositive
