Explanation of past simple and present perfect

Past simple

Something that happened at a specific moment in the past and that's finished

Usually in combination with a word that shows it's in the past, like: yesterday, last week, in 2012

He played his first international match in 2012

Present perfect

Have/has + voltooid deelwoord

When you're talking about a period of time, not a specific moment in the past

Signal words: ever, never, until now, lately, since, for, (not) yet, just, already

The All Blacks have performed the Haka since 1884

They have just won their first match
