The local people are subjected to a lot of violence to get them to listen to the Dutch government

He used a divide and rule tactic: amethod of government where you put groups against each other to prevent them from cooperating, with the aim of making it easier for yourself to govern.

One of the most imporant things for the Netherlands was making sure they were also making money from the colony.
This lead to exploitation: to exploit the local people from the local resources.
Example: cultivation system.
Indonesian farmers had to use 20% of their ground for Dutch trade.

It caused famines
It didn't make a lot of money
Effect: free labour
Indonesian farmers now started working for Dutch entrepreneurs
