would have + past participle
should have + past participle
needn't have + past participle
didn't need to + infinitive

(past participle = verb + -ed/ 3rd irregular)

                      an event or feeling we imagined in the past
                                      but which didn't happen.

                     to criticise or express a regret about the past

       an action in the past which happened but wasn't necessary

You needn't have reserved a table. Only a couple of tables are occupied. (= but you reserved a table anyway)
We needn't have gone to the grocery store. We still had some pizza in the freezer. (=but you went anyway)
