Past simple
  • An action that has finished.

  • A story about different actions that happened in
    the past. 
? Did I talk to her last week?
+ I talked to her last week.
- I didn't talk to her last week.
Tom asked his sister if she knew the girl, but his sister also said "No." He was devastated

Past continuous
  • Used to describe a longer action going on in the past:
    someone was in the middle
    of doing something.

  • (background) descriptions.  They often describe what the scene looks like!

I was looking for new shoes.
I was playing tennis at six pm.
She was wearing a dress and tights. Her hand was holding up a peace sign.

Past simple vs past continuous
We use the past simple for the shorter action (interruption), and the past continuous for the longer action (that was already going on).

I was working when my mom walked in. 


My father came home while/as I was doing the dishes.
