Wat is een 'adjective' en wat is een 'adverb'?

Adjective = bijvoegelijk naamwoord

Gebruik: zegt iets over een zelfstandig naamwoord.

She is wearing a beautiful dress.

Let op! Bij deze werkwoorden moet je altijd een bijv. naamwoord gebruiken: to be, to taste, to smell, to look, to sound, to feel.

Hoe maken we een adverb?

Adverb (=bijwoord)

Gebruik: verteld hoe iets is gebeurd / hoe oud iets is. Het zegt iets over een werkwoord, bijvoeglijk naamwoord of een ander bijwoord.

Formule:

bijvoeglijk naamwoord + ly   

good - well,   fast - fast, hard - hard

(zie p. 172 voor onregelmatige vormen)   

       

Plaats:

- Vóór bijv. naamwoord of  ander bijwoord.            You're going to be extremely popular. 

                                                                                                     She works really seriously on the journal.

- Vóór het hoofdwerkwoord.                                         She regularly asks me to write for her website.     

- Achteraan de zin voor meer nadruk.                      He grabbeb the snake quickly.

Spellingsuitzonderingen:

Medeklinker + y = - ily              Funny -> funnily

-le ->- ly                                        Gentle -> gently

-ic -> -ically                                  Ironic -> ironically

- ue -> - uly                                  true -> truly

-LL -> - LLy                                   full -> fully
