To be going to

• We use "to be going to" for 2 reasons!
  
• Form: to be + going to + infinitive (hele werkwoord)

• 1) When we  talk about plans or intentions (before the conversation has started)

1. I am going to visit my aunt next week.
2. We’re not going to attend a concert later this month.
3. Are they going to take the bus?
4. We are going to take a train to Italy this summer.

To be going to

• 2) With a prediction based on evidence / a clue.
  
  

1. Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain today.
2. It’s 8.15. I’m going to be late.
3. Be careful! You're going to fall!

• You don't always need the reason in the sentence. In sentence 3 I can assume I can see why someone is going to fall.

ANQ - going to

• Affirmative (positive)
• They are going to Italy this summer
• Negative
• They aren't / are not going to Italy this summer
• Questions 
• Are they going to Italy this summer?

Will vs shall

• Shall can only be used with "I" and "we"
• More British English
• Asking for an opinion, suggestion or to offer something

1. Shall we go swimming tomorrow?
2. Shall I help you with that?

Will/shall

• We use will for 4 different reasons
• Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 1) For a spontaneous decision during a conversation

1. I will help you move the couch.
2. There’s no more bread – I’ll go and buy some.
3. I’ll have a sandwich and a cup of tea.

Will

We use will/shall for 4 different reasons

Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 2) For a prediction based on an opinion or uncertainty about the future
• (often in combination with "don't think", "probably" or "possibly")
  
  

1. We will win tomorrow's game.
2. I don’t think dad will be angry.
3. I’ll probably get really nervous before my speech.

Will

• 3) For a wish, spontaneous offers, refusals, promises, suggestions or requests

1. I hope she will give me a present.
   
2. I’ll get the door for you.
   
3. If I have to choose then I won’t go to her party.
   
4. We promise we will be on time.
   
5. I will pick you up tomorrow.
   
6. Will you cook dinner for me tonight?
   
7. Will you get me a chair, please?

Will

We use will/shall for 4 different reasons

• 4) For facts or for things that happen so often they could be a fact (algemene waarheden)

1. A well-mannered person will hold the door for an elderly person.
2. He won’t be on time, he’s always late.

ANQ - will

• Affirmative (positive)
• They will/they'll be on time. 
• Negative
• They won't / will not be on time.
• Questions 
• Will they be on time?

Shall

Follows the same principle as will but the negative is something to look out for: 

I shall not do that

OR

I shan't do that
