Vuistregel:
De to + hele werkwoord suggereert dat het nog niet gebeurd is (of in de toekomst pas echt gaat gebeuren):

- I remember to do groceries (je herinnert dat je nog boodschappen moet gaan doen)


- I stopped to buy bread (Je was met iets anders bezig, je stopt daarmee en gaat brood kopen)

Vuistregel:
De gerund (werkwoord + ing) suggereert dat het al gebeurd is (al gaande is):

- I remember doing groceries (is al gebeurd).

- I stopped buying bread (je koopt helemaal geen brood meer).

- I love playing a game tonight (Je houdt van spelletjes / games spelen. Je kan niet iets leuk vinden, als je het niet eerder hebt gedaan).

Chapter 4 - 4.7 relative clauses (relative pronouns)

Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden (relative pronouns) gebruik je om zinnen die een gemeenschappelijk onderdeel hebben aan elkaar te koppelen. Een betrekkelijk voornaamwoord slaat als het ware een brug tussen twee zinnen. In de Engelse taal kennen we de volgende betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden: who, which, that, whose, whom en where.

who/that: als je wilt verwijzen naar personen.
  • The man who visited my birthday is my father.
  • These boys, who are learning about maths, are students.
  • The man that visited my birthday is my father.





which/that: als je verwijst naar dingen en dieren.

  • This is the car which I bought in 2013.
  • His wedding, which was fantastic, ended with a big party in their house.
  • This is the car that I bought in 2013.

where: als je verwijst naar plaatsen of locaties.
  • The building where I forgot my bag will be closed tomorrow.
  • The Netherlands, where most Dutch people live, is a flat country.
