70% of all people live along rivers or at the coast.
Almost no water draws into the soil, so all the water flows into the river at the same time. Large amounts of water that flow into the river in one go is called a peak discharge.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Measures against flooding
Short term and long term measurements:
  • Reducing the enhanced greenhouse effect
  • Stop deforestation and regeneration of forests
  • Constructing dykes and dams
  • Ensuring a safe drink water supply after a flood
  • More space along the rivers (Ruimte voor de Rivier)
  • Practising evacuation of citizens in case of flooding
