Je gebruikt enkelvoudige zinnen om een complete gedachte over te brengen. Enkelvoudige zinnen hebben altijd één onderwerp en één persoonsvorm

 He likes playing games in the afternoon.

We have bought some tickets for next week.

The zoo adopted two tigers last month.

Samengestelde zinnen

je maakt een samengestelde zin door twee enkelvoudige zinnen samen te voegen met behulp van voegwoorden.

Voegwoorden: and, but, for, nor, or, yet of so.

• I always take the train, for I haven't got a car.
  
• We want a new car, but we think it's too expensive.
  
• An earthquake struck the area, but nobody was hurt.
  

Complexe zinnen.

Hoofdzin + 1 of meer bijzinnen.

Andere voegwoorden:

Because, since, after, although of  betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden: when, that who of which.

We help injured animals, although it takes some time.

They can't enter the area, because it's unsafe.

Aid workers can't get in, which makes matters worse.
